You’ve probably heard us talking about YouTube and the power it has in reaching your audience. There are so many statistics that make the case about why you should be using video and putting those videos on YouTube. If you’re not familiar with these stats, let us know and we’ll send them to you. We will say this for sure: if you’re not using video, right now, to help market your company or grow your business, you are behind your competitors! They are getting results.
But that’s not the topic today, it’s more about YouTube. We all know that YouTube is the #2 search engine, and that by itself, should be enough to get you moving. But there have been a few stories that are pointing to the fact that YouTube is about to become even more powerful.
The first is story that YouTube announced is that they are going to be creating a series of new channels “created by well-known personalities and content producers from the TV, film, music, news, and sports fields, as well as some of the most innovative up-and-coming media companies”. They are pouring a lot of money into this. What does this mean? It means that YouTube realizes the number of eyeballs that watch videos on their site every day. They realize that the web is where video is going and that, eventually, it will take over from more traditional platforms. And it means that they are starting to set the stage for original content.
The second announcement is that YouTube is looking to create premium channels that will be more like TV channels and they model looks like viewers will either pay a la carte for what the to watch or subscribe to the channels. (This is just for the premium content…everything else stays the same).
So, what’s so important about these announcements? The answer is simple. It shows how YouTube is continuing to gain power and the is setting the stage to continue to be the dominate place for web video. Let’s face it, they already are #1, but they realize that the landscape continues to change and they are making sure they stay #1 moving forward.
What’s the take away? Well, we may sound like a broken record, but the take away is that using video becomes more important every day. Anything you are doing from a marketing, public relations, sales or social media perspective probably has an element for which you could use video. And using video will extend the life and reach of that element.
You may think that your event or company meeting has no opportunity to use video. But think about the one person that will be there that can give you a great sound bite, that can say that one thing that will make a different….and that’s all you need. That’s how it can start. Whenever we’ve gone to a meeting, event, party with the sole purpose of just getting an interview with ONE person, we’ve always walked away with several others…and, thus, several videos.
